Sidekicks – Wesley Chapel Parents and Students,

I hope this message finds your family safe and healthy. I’m writing you this message today to inform you that Sidekicks Wesley Chapel will be ceasing in-studio operations, effective immediately.

For over three years, Sidekicks has worked day-in and day-out to bring the Wesley Chapel community high quality martial arts instruction and character development that makes a real impact in the lives of children and adults. The dedication and enthusiasm of our members here has rivaled any students that I’ve trained over my entire martial arts career. For me, it’s been a real joy to work with you over the past few years.

Like so many, the global pandemic made a huge impact on the Wesley Chapel studio.   As soon as it became clear that we were going to have to stop classes by executive order of the Governor this past March, we took extraordinary steps to transition and adapt the program by providing virtual training through the Zoom platform.

The intent was two-fold; provide a continuation of normalcy for our students during a trying time and to ensure the financial continuity of the studio. It was incredibly heartwarming to see the students that participated train so hard, embrace virtual training, and stick with the program.

At the same time, as soon as it became clear that quarantine was coming, we began reaching out to the landlord and asked for help, since even with virtual training, not enough students were going to continue through quarantine (which we totally understand, quarantine is hard enough even without the complication of trying to learn new skills). The conversation about that dragged out for the entire quarantine period until late this week when the property manager made it clear that they weren’t going to help us in the manner that we need, but would rather we gave up the space.

The terms they gave us exit are very generous, essentially allowing us to shed any debt accumulated because of COVID-19 and no liability relating to the rest of the lease by giving up the space. We were renting below what the market value of the retail space, so this is probably the move that’s best for them.

Unfortunately, that means that we’ll be ending operations of the Wesley Chapel campus as of today. I’m really sad about it, because I was personally excited about the work our new instructor team was planning for our Wesley Chapel family. They are looking for space of their own to start a program and when that information becomes available, I will be happy to pass it along to you.

We are still holding virtual martial arts classes and I know that most of you were still training there. If you wish to continue training that way, let me know. As of right now, it is our plan to stop billing for all students for July, unless you opt to continue.

I was very optimistic about our ability to continue forward, unfortunately, with a lot of things in 2020, change is going to be part of the process.

Again, it was my privilege to serve you. If this is where we choose to part ways, I hope that you are able to continue your martial arts journey elsewhere and that you will think about us fondly.
